Hello Photographers, Photo Assistants & Digital Techs.

We still have space for our Photo Assistants Boot Camp that will be held this weekend. And from the stories I've heard from photographers, rental companies and from what I've personally seen on set there are a lot of assistants in need of some serious training. In this economy you have to wonder. "is my phone not ringing because there's no work or because I don't have the skills needed on set.?"  It certainly not like the 90's but there are people that are working.

I had a conversation a while back with a photographer friend of mine who told me about the YouTube series 'you suck at Photoshop'. From that we started coming up with a list of some of the inane things we've seen on photo shoots.
20 things you should never do as a photo assistant
Or You SUCK as a photo assistant if: .

Sadly some of these examples I've seen first hand and many I've seen in the last 3-6 months from people marketing themselves as photo assistants. This is suppose to be both humorous and a bit disappointing. And you can add your comments and experiences to the post.

There were a number of posts in another Photo group forum regarding the
Archiving of film and old negatives. and concerns about its degradation over time. That made me think about my very early days of working at photo labs before I made the move to assisting years ago. This article my be useful if not enlightening to some.

Are you using the New Capture 1 Pro 4.6.2  or are you still using 3.7.9?

Photo Assistants Boot Camp

DATES: March 7-8 2009
LOCATION:  Sand Box Studios - NYC.

I have received numerous emails from photographers, or been asked during conversations to offer this course teaching basic photo assisting, equipment and lighting skills to photo assistants. In spite of the fact that we are turning into a digital profession the same skills are needed on set regardless of whether a photographer is shooting film or digital. Assistants should still know how to light, meter, color correct, handle production elements, and be aware of common sense on set etiquette. There are too few old-school photographers out there any more; and too few present day photographers that actually had much assisting experience. That being said we will be offering a 'Photo Assistants Boot Camp & certification'. I know that we can in two days teach you most of what you should have been taught in photo school, and should be learning on set. Those taking this workshop and listed on the assistants database will be certified on the site as having taken our course and trained by us. Workshop attendees will also be entitled discounts offered by select photo companies and retailers.

Please look under WORKSHOPS on the site menu for complete details and registration page. Register here: http://www.photoassistantbootcamp.com

If you have a job listing for an assistant, Studio manager, or digital tech email the complete details to me and I will email it out to all of those in my databases'. So far this has worked out very well for a number of photographers and production companies. Also if you have an assistant or digital tech that you have worked with that was outstanding please let me know. This will help those on the database get closer to being recommended. Of course you can also send me an email regarding those that suck and I can gently tell them to get there act together or remove them from the database.
